Biggest BASSINTHEGRASS ever rocks Darwin

Thousands of people descended on Darwin’s iconic Mindil Beach in what was the Northern Territory’s biggest music festival ever yesterday. Music fans from across Australia snapped up 16,000 tickets weeks in advance, with many making the pilgrimage to the Top End from interstate.

The massive crowd enjoyed 12 hours of non-stop music from the nation’s hottest acts, including Vera Blue, Xavier Rudd, Hilltop Hoods and The Teskey Brothers.

“It was one of my favourite shows to date and… the crowd was so energetic and we absolutely loved every second,” Vera Blue said.

Xavier Rudd said he was a fan of BASSINTHEGRASS and Darwin.

“What a crowd. What a vibe,” he said. “It was a great place to reconnect with other artists after not seeing each other for so long during the COVID silence, and to do it here was a connective moment. I’ve always loved Darwin. It’s got its own kinda magic that keeps drawing me back. I’ve always loved the place and I’m gonna make sure I’m coming back this Dry.”

Festival attendees soaked up Darwin’s clear blue skies and a stunning sunset, alongside the festival’s unique attractions and activations, including the BASS Beauty Bar, Illumination Station, Sunset Disco Beach Club, Live Street Art Site, Silent Disco and much more.

BASSINTHEGRASS takes place on Larrakia land, and this year’s program included a moving Welcome to Country, Saltwater Smoking Ceremony and special performance by the Belyuen dancers on the beach as the sun set.

As dark descended, the party atmosphere ramped up with the venue at capacity and Australian music royalty such as G Flip, Peking Duk and Hot Dub Time Machine rocking the stages.

Delivered by Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC) on behalf of the Northern Territory Government, BASSINTHEGRASS will return next year on 20 May 2023.

NTMEC CEO Tim Watsford said Early Bird tickets are on sale now.

“BASSINTHEGRASS continues to grow and this was the biggest festival ever,” he said. “It is a unique event in a unique location, and more and more people from around Australia are keen to attend. Early Bird tickets always get snapped up, so grab yours now.”
