’Tis the weekend to be jolly!

It’s time to celebrate the festive spirit with a Christmas carol extravaganza at the much-loved Carols by Candlelight this Sunday, 3 December.

The City of Darwin’s Carols by Candlelight is a decades-old tradition which unofficially marks the start of the festive season in Darwin. Thousands of people flock to The Gardens Amphitheatre at the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens to join in the fun.

Now in its 49th year, the annual event promises to be bigger and better than ever with a new celebratory theme, more soloists and special performances.

Seasoned Top End performing arts professional Shalom Kaa has also joined the team as the event’s Artistic Director. An Ambassador for Variety – the Children’s Charity NT, he will also co-host the festivities on the day with Hot 100 presenter Sarah Passalick.

“This year, the selection of music and performances is very carol-centric, consisting mostly of well-known singalong carols and popular Christmas songs for the first ever ‘carol marathon’,” Mr Kaa said.

“We can’t wait to see everyone singing their hearts out!”

The theme for 2023 is ‘mother’, which offers a chance to honour mothers, aunts, grandmothers and Mother Earth.

Thirty-three soloists will join the program this year, and there will be a special performance by His Honour Professor the Honourable Hugh Heggie PSM, Administrator of the Northern Territory, and partner Ms Ruth Jones, plus performances by local radio personalities. In addition, there will be an appearance from Santa, and fireworks.

Entry is by gold coin donation with all monies going to Variety – the Children’s Charity NT. For more details visit https://www.facebook.com/carolsbycandlelightdarwin/
