Organisers have confirmed dates for a captivating new festival celebrating humanity’s innate connection to the night skies. Dark Skies Festival will take place from 6-14 May 2021 at Earth Sanctuary in Alice Springs.
The nine-night event will take visitors on a journey of light, sound and darkness beneath one of the greatest night skies in the world, in the very heart of Australia.
Earth Sanctuary has teamed up with the Artist Expedition Society to deliver the event, which will showcase a unique fusion of art, science and culture. Visitors will enjoy projection-based artworks by a range of artists, scientific talks, musical performances, workshops – and maybe even a meteor shower.
The new event received funding through the Northern Territory Government’s Event Funding round, administered by the Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC).
NTMEC CEO Tim Watsford said the festival is a fascinating addition to the Territory’s events calendar.
“The Territory is home to some of the most unique events in Australia, if not the world, and the Dark Skies Festival will further add to the reasons for people from all over the country to come and visit Central Australia.
“This place is truly like no other, and we look forward to sharing its magic with people from across the nation.”
Earth Sanctuary Director and Festival Co-Director Tom Falzon said the night skies have been important to humanity for eons.
“The Moon, stars and constellations have played a central role among cultures for as long as we can remember,” he said. “It is often stated that astronomy was the first science, as it represents the human connection to the cosmos, inspiring thought, art, ceremony and social behaviour.
“The Dark Skies Festival at Earth Sanctuary offers space enthusiasts and artists a rare opportunity to celebrate the night sky in a region that offers one of the best viewing conditions on the planet.”
