The wait for world-class hockey is almost over, with international action returning to the Northern Territory for the first time since 2016. Darwin will host the Oceania Cup from 4–7 September 2025, featuring a thrilling Trans-Tasman Test series.
In one of the sport’s fiercest rivalries, the Australian Hockeyroos and Kookaburras will take on New Zealand’s Black Sticks in a best-of-three, six-match series that promises intensity, drama and world-class skill at the MWT Hockey Centre.
While the Hockeyroos chase qualification for the 2026 World Cup, the Kookaburras — already qualified — will look to reinforce their dominance in this classic Trans-Tasman contest. Both Australian teams will defend their Oceania Cup titles after victories in New Zealand in 2023 secured their places at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Adding to the excitement, local fans will witness a milestone moment as Darwin-born three-time Olympian Jeremy Hayward captains the Kookaburras on home Territory soil for the very first time.
“Playing at home in front of family and friends will be really special,” said Hayward. “But just as important is showcasing international hockey to Darwin and the hockey community. It’s been a long time since the region has had access to this level of the game, so bringing it back and inspiring the next generation means a lot to us.”
As one of international hockey’s most important tournaments, the Oceania Cup has long been a pathway to the sport’s biggest stages and now offers Top End fans a rare opportunity to experience world-class competition in their own backyard.
CEO Hockey NT, Jason Butcher said, “Hosting the Hockeyroos, Kookaburras and Vantage New Zealand’s Black Sticks here in Darwin gives our community a chance to experience the very best of the sport up close, while showcasing the culture, passion and resilience that make the Top End unique.”
This year’s Oceania Cup will deliver the thrill of elite hockey on the field alongside an electric atmosphere of entertainment and family-friendly fun. The action kicks off Thursday, 4 September, with the Kookaburras facing the Black Sticks Men at 6pm, followed by the Hockeyroos against the Black Sticks Women at 8pm. Every match will be streamed live and free and on demand on 7plus, ensuring fans across Australia don’t miss a moment.
