In great news for Territory footy fans, Darwin will host the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round 11 game between Gold Coast SUNS and Hawthorn next year, while Alice Springs will host the Round 12 match between Melbourne and Brisbane Lions.
The games, which will take place at TIO Stadium in Darwin and TIO Traegar Oval in Alice Springs, are part of the Northern Territory’s partnership with AFL, delivered by NT Major Events Company.
Tim Watsford, NT Major Events Company CEO, said the games follow a bumper year for AFL in the Territory in 2020.
“We had a massive AFL year here this year, with three matches played in the Territory, including one of the biggest fixtures of all, the Dreamtime match,” Mr Watsford said. “Next year we can look forward to not only the ever-popular Gold Coast SUNS and Melbourne returning to the Territory, but also mega club Hawthorn making the trek north.
“They haven’t played a game in the Territory since 1991, when they had a pre-season clash with the NTFL Buffaloes, so it will be fantastic to welcome them.
“There will be plenty of support for all the clubs playing here next year, as Territorians love their footy, and the chance to watch world-class athletes in action right here in the NT.”
The AFL will release exact dates and times for the two matches next year, along with details of when tickets will be on sale.
